A Winter's Solstice V (BMG 01934 11174)
1995 marked the first year of The Winter's Solstice exponential evolution that framed the franchise for the next 5 years. BMG pushed a huge growth in production and marketing of these albums during this time (of the 24 total albums produced, 1995 to 2000 had around 60% of the releases). A Winter's Solstice V marked the first of these, though it was the last produced by Dawn Atkinson as shortly after production she moved to work with Ackerman on his new Imaginary Road label and BMG brought in their executives from other brands to spearhead subsequent records. Only in 2001 did the label move back to the more traditional, familiar Atkinson-led records.
Still, A Winter's Solstice V is a wonderful record with classics from Barbara Higbie and Nightnoise, among others.
This youtube video features Higbie's opening track "The Simple Birth;" a much more upbeat and welcome opening track compared to her track on "On A Winter's Night" in 1997, to which Higbie performed the darker Coventry Carol.
